Strange Stories From The Bible – July 31, 2022

1 Samuel 26:1-12

Today’s Bible story is about where it’s like the universe conspires against the bad guy, And the good guy gets a break. This could have been a story of revenge. But instead there’s a twist in the story, that teaches us an important lesson in life.

Today’s lesson is that, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. That’s a verse straight from the Bible, in Proverbs 9:10a. David started with the fear of the Lord, meaning the respect of the Lord And based on his respect for God, he used as much wisdom as he could.

So, if you ever wondered what God wants you to do in life, or what his will is for you? Remember this principle. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom

How Do We Finish God’s Work?
God has given all of us work to do. Leaders, parents, students, and workers in industry. Eventually,
we all need to think about what will happen when it’s time for us to move on.

Probably all of us have felt the effects of a bad transition before — where someone left unexpectedly
and it created a void or chaos in their absence.

On the other hand, a transition well done can be a tremendous blessing and even leave behind a
legacy that empowers others.

Our Big Idea Today, is that…

How can we overcome addictions?

Addictions come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. There are of course addictions to hard drugs. But there are other kinds of addictions. Internet addiction, gaming addiction, an addiction to buying things or keeping things, an addiction to approval, an addiction to being in love.

As a rule, addictions take over our lives and prevent us from doing the healthy things we were meant to do.

Probably all of us get into a rut, where we know something in our life has too much of a hold on our heart and yet, it’s hard to stop. And so, we all need to know how to control our addictions. Because if we can maintain balance, we can be healthy individuals, with healthy relationships, who help people and have the best possible future.

The Good News is that… The Bible shows us the way to overcome addictions.

1. We should expect trouble, and
2. We should share God’s mission

The Ten Commandments – February 6, 2022

Exodus 20:16

My question for today is: How can we control our most powerful ability as human beings?

We’re closer to superheroes than you might think. If you know how to use your most powerful ability, there is no telling how much of a difference you can make, and how much you can help others, and how fulfilled your life can be.

Our most powerful ability as human beings is to use eords. Words can have incredible destructive power. Words can wound people, destroy reputations, and end marriages. Words can mislead whole societies. Words can cause nations to go to war. In fact, just a one word tweet by Elon Musk can totally alter or even overthrow financial markets.

On the other hand, words can bring friendship and laughter. The words of the gospel can literally change a person’s eternity. So, we have no greater power as human beings, and we need to learn how to use our words well. For that, we turn to the ten commandments.

Today we’re talking about the 9th commandment, from Exodus 20:16, which says:
“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”

Most people think this commandment is just about not lying. But today, I want to help us see, that there is so much more to it than just that.

My question today is…
What are the ingredients of a life well lived?

If you’ve ever suffered from a lack of direction, motivation, purpose, or have poor time management, or if you get into commitments that you regret and you feel like wasting time. This is the sermon for you. It’s a reflection on the things worth doing in life.

The Big Idea Today is: A life well lived is full of Righteousness, Peace, and Joy.

How should any of us respond to personal injustice?
That’s my big question today.

I think we’ve all experienced some type of personal injustice.
It happens all the time: rude drivers;
people who cut you off in traffic,
or bud in line ups at the cashier, even unfair policies or practices at work.

Today we are going to learn from people who lived in extreme injustice.
They were slaves in the Roman empire.
We need to learn from them because Jesus tells US to be servants,

And he tells us the greatest among us will be the slave to all.

One thing that non-Christians know about Christians that we follow God’s rules and laws and have some type of moral code we live by.

But as Christians, how do we make sense of all the rules we have to follow?

When it comes God’s law, most Christians seem to fall into two extremes:
a) One is to live like God’s rules don’t really apply. Just believe a few things, and everything else is a suggestion.
b) The other is to be super serious about rules and apply them in a miserable way.

Either extreme misses the point and the blessings of following God’s law. The proper approach to God’s rules will empower you and give you joy.

Our Big Ideas today are that:
1. God’s Rules matter a lot, but…
2. We need to focus on the intent of the rules.

The Book of James: Disciplined Living – January 10, 2020

James 1:4-5

There are Christians who dream their life, and there are Christians who live their dream.

What I mean is, there a Christians who talk a lot about following Jesus, making the sacrifices, and achieving great things for Him. Then, there are Christians who actually get those things done. It is those who can finish, who can get past the stage of ideas, who are most blessed in life.

So if we want to be blessed in life we need to… Finish with PERSEVERANCE.

Two keys to perseverance are:
1. Patience
2. Planning
