Christmas (2023) – December 24, 2023

“The Reason for Christmas”

John 3:16

I want to talk about one of those gifts that can’t be bought. I want to talk about the greatest gift in the world. Spoiler alert: that gift is Jesus. I’m supposed to say that because I’m a pastor, but I really mean it. I believe we all need more of Jesus in our lives.

We all come from different backgrounds. Some of us aren’t Christians so we don’t follow Jesus, so I expect you have your reasons for why you don’t follow Jesus. But, I want to make the case that if the stories of Jesus were true, it would be a good thing. If there is a God who loves you and has a wonderful plan for you and he wants you to spend eternity in heaven with him, that’s a good thing. And if you do some digging and try to get to the truth about Jesus, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

Others of us here are Christians, and we already have Jesus, and we’ve already experienced the greatest gift. But no matter how serious of a Christian you are, we always need more of Jesus, and we need to experience him more fully in every part of our life. So, no matter where you are in your faith journey, we all need more of Jesus.

So, my big question today is: how can we receive the greatest gift (which happens to be Jesus)? My answer is:

  1. God has to prepare the gift, and…
  2. We need to commit to the gift.

And my task will be to show you these ideas from the Bible.

Our main verse today comes from the book of John. John 3:16. It reads:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

“The Greatness & Humility of Christ”

John 1:1-14

All kinds of things grab our attention, especially during Christmas! December can be really busy. We have family parties and we have to buy presents!

And if we’re not careful we can miss the greatest thing about Christmas! So, my big question today is: Why is Jesus worth our attention this Christmas season? 

In our passage, we will learn 2 things about Jesus:

  1. Jesus is the still greatest person we can know, and…
  2. He is also the humblest person we can know.

“Finding Purpose”
1 John 1:1-4

This week, as we enter this holiday season, we begin our sermon series on Christmas.

My big question today is: How do we find purpose?

The answer I’ve found in the Bible is: we find our purpose from knowing and sharing Jesus.

My task today will be to show you this answer from th e Bible and I’ll talk about what we can do practically to live a life of purpose.

1 John 1:1-4 reads:

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.

Based on this passage, we find our purpose from:

  1. Knowing Jesus
  2. Sharing Jesus
